They're both in a cage and a flower in a pot. 😉 However, as with animals in a cage (well, it depends on which animal in which cage, of course), they are better treated and live a life better than in nature. Don't forget it's a wrong idea to think that animals are happier in nature. If they are given proper care in captivity they are much happier. Life in nature means a life of constant stress (from having to find food and avoid being eaten mostly) and a short life. Even the aspect of freedom is "overrated" Although it is true that most animals in captivity have less freedom of movement than in nature, in nature, most animals live in a small area (which they know well), do not travel around the world. And the animals that travel a lot do it for climate and/or food reasons. Needs that disappear when properly cared for in captivity. But we're getting out of the subject here, so back to Bonsai. On the other hand, knowing that the tree is 300 years old and all the work and care it has received during all those years, I think it is worth more than many other things that can cost that price (coches, contemporary art and such)Am amazing tree and worth every penny no doubt. For me the joy of the bonsai comes in my creation, and even if they will never be as amazing as some of the masterpieces, I have fun to cultivate them anyway. I often have people who say things about my trees on the lines that it's cruel to keep small pots. It doesn't realize that for every tree growing to maturity there are literally billions of seeds that never do. Keeping a tree in a pot is limiting the amount of space available for the roots to grow, and in that sense it is no different than a seed that is growing in a rock depression or somewhere in nature where it only has a small amount of soil. Bonsai are some of the lucky ones. Yeah, I never really understood the concept of being cruel to a plant. Is it possible to be cruel to a thing that has no brain?
